Embarking on a New Journey to Empowerment & Financial Freedom.
The “what’s next?” post-baby was an awkward place for me. Although I didn’t always know exactly what I wanted to do growing up...to this point, I was always able to find meaning & purpose in my career. So starting this new career in #finance was exciting and scary. I was drawn to the #opportunity because what touches our lives more than more #money??!! Being from #NewYorkCity, I grew up in one of the wealthiest cities in the world; expensive real estate, shops, you name it. But I also saw the other side, the abandoned buildings, graffiti, and empty lots in my community.
MY GRANDPARENTS...WERE WORLD RENOWN MUSICIANS! MY GRANDMOTHER WAS A CLASSICALLY TRAINED OPERA SINGER...MY GRANDFATHER PERFORMED WITH NINA SIMONE, HERBIE MANN, AND OLATUNJI..."
The city also breeds a certain toughness. Both sides of my family were leaders in their respective industries. My grandfather was an #NYU graduate. He worked for Johnson Publishing (Ebony and JET Magazines). He moved on to become an #executive at American Airlines. He even started several small businesses (a candy store, and had just released his first publication of his travel magazine was he passed). My grandmother became an executive assistant to the president of a college with only a high school diploma! My grandparents on my father’s side were #worldrenown #musicians! My grandmother was a classically trained opera singer and performed with the Metropolitan Opera House. My grandfather was a drummer who performed with Nina Simone, Herbie Mann, and Olatunji just to name a few. They followed the American dream at a time that wasn’t favorable for African Americans and were looked up to by many, including myself. But with all their success, wealth eluded them. Like so many young people, I mimicked the examples of my surroundings. I worked hard and achieved success. I worked for companies like Michael Kors and Saks Fifth Avenue. With my last company, I rose quickly through the ranks. I had several mentors that believe in me. Not only did I gained the respect of the owner, but I also became part of his plan to grow the US chain to 80 locations! He was a celebrated #businessman and featured in many trade publications. I believed I found a career home where I could retire. After my move to LA, there were a lot of structural changes and I became disappointed with the newer leadership. Instead of my experience being an asset, it became a liability. After I discovered I was expecting, my priorities shifted. I realized that sacrificing my ability to raise my daughter while working for a company that didn’t value me wasn’t an option. I was blessed to be the primary #caregiver and #nurture my daughter’s development for the first full year of her life. After she turned one, my desire to get back into the #workforce started to grow. I was now plagued with the same question many new mothers ask...what’s next for me. I didn’t want to return to my previous career or industry that was unstable. I wanted to do something that had a real impact on people’s lives.
NOT ONLY WAS I NOW ABLE TO CHANGE THE TRAJECTORY OF MY FAMILY'S LIFE, BUT I'M ALSO ABLE TO EDUCATE OTHER FAMILES TO DO THE SAME.
Then the opportunity to work in #finance presented itself. I mean, God was listening because I couldn’t have timed it better if I tried! I started to learn those wealth principles that eluded my ancestors. Not only was I now able to change the trajectory of my family’s life, but I’m also able to educate other families to do the same. Not many things have as much of an impact on our lives as money. It determines the house we live in, access to healthy food, healthcare, education, and the list goes on. I understood at an early age that the wealthy teach their children the rules of money. It’s a dream come true to be in a position to help people create a legacy for their family, to help remove the limitation of not having enough. We are holding Financial Literary seminars weekly!!
